From November 2008 to October 2010, the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Library examined acquisitions from the years 1933 to 1947 regarding their origin and method of acquisition as part of a project funded by the Bureau for Provenance Research. All cases in which Nazi-looted property is suspected are documented in this catalogue. Also documented are selected titles that are not in a direct context of looting, but whose origin is closely linked to National Socialist structures.

The Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Library is thus contributing to the implementation of the "Joint Declaration by the Federal Government, the Länder and the national associations of local authorities on the tracing and return of Nazi-confiscated art, especially from Jewish property" passed in December 1999.

In doing so, it builds on activities of past years, in which it contributed to the historical and library-historical discourse on Nazi-looted property in libraries through several symposia.
